Wolfie's Last Christmas Eve... 2012

Wolfie's Last Christmas Eve... 2012

Patches of snow on scab rock.
Wolfie, in late afternoon,
slightly doped on a painkiller,
pain of bone cancer,
paused east of the house...
stared off... into the abyss...
amber-brown eyes sad with love... coming loss....

No snow this Christmas Eve.

On rough ground out back,
a young spruce tree
rises from volcanic soil
enriched with Wolfhound cremains.

If I drive shrub steppe all night,
will Wolfie's ghost
ride the car's back seat,
will I feel the weight of his great head
on my left shoulder, will he say,
in his little-boy-voice,
Stay awake... take us home?

Ice Moon Chronograph: 15

Ice Moon Chronograph: 15

Blacktop exile... an abandoned road,
fog, a mile of weedy pavement, sagebrush,
dawn-howl of coyotes, gloss of fresh ice:
you tell the Wolfhound, Sit for your likeness.
She is the grand marshal of your parade.

Ice Moon Chronograph: 12

Ice Moon Chronograph: 12

The distant two-lane cracked blacktop,
a state highway to dense mineral water,
turns kicked-torso blue in late sunlight.
You shuffle-jog through desert scrub,
too old to gnaw road kill off pavement.

Night Sky / Cosmic Whirl

Night Sky / Cosmic Whirl
(a crayon sketch by Red Shuttleworth)

Night Sky / Cosmic Whirl

Endless asteroid slam-down possibilities,
vaporization of sci-fi theater marquees.

You could say we're rockbound...
that the sky is a rock concert...
that humanity has had its vignette.

Cyclical wrinkles, flaring lines
over Seattle or  Spokane or...
or We're out of milk...
can you pick me up early from work?

Constellations of catastrophe...
NASA asteroid photographs...
stock market offers in asteroid mining.
Cobalt, water, and nickel for pistol plating!

Open expanse of dream-noir rocketry...
arrive-distant preceding yourself...
lost from all you'd hoped to love.

Godot Tree
(A photograph by Red Shuttleworth)

Ice Moon Chronograph: 10

Deadpan winterscape on a shrub steppe.
Every morning you pass a Godot Tree
where it encroaches on an abandoned road.
Today dense fog...  nearby spectral coyotes...
rapid-frantic bark-yips: unbroken timeline!

Memory: frozen shirts on a clothesline...
a wrecks-closed road into snowy Tehachapi.
That was winters ago... before this night...
stumble-dream over rock and icy weeds...
a slush-drip hydrant for a thirsty coyote.

MOJAVE RAMBLE-STUMBLE: A Red Shuttleworth One-Poem Chapbook

Mojave Ramble-Stumble

a poem from a decades-old notebook

Red Shuttleworth

Decades ago, back in the 1970's, when Blythe, California, had a third of its present population, back when you could drive into towns like Parker, Arizona, and get asked if you'd like to be a local librarian (without any librarian-school to your credit), I drove the Mojave, stopped at a few motels, drank in a few saloons, filled notebook pages with poems.  In 2011, after fussing and fiddling with an almost-ready-to-be-burned ancient notebook, I posted a version of Mojave Ramble-Stumble on this blog.  The places, people, and times I wrote about so long ago... they no longer exist... not really.

Ominous Warmth... Colder Days Ahead

Ominous Warmth... Colder Days Ahead

Fewer switchbacks as you pass seventy...
and you stare at a hyper-real desert sky:
near-visible grey horses, darker clouds.
Fly-over jetliners.  All this perceivedness
dwindling just as you wish it to blossom.

Chrysanthemum Dance Tea

Chrysanthemum Dance Tea
(A crayon sketch by Red Shuttleworth)

Chrysanthemum Dance Tea

Polaroid-white frost on scab rock.
Black holes, cracks and crevices in time,
heat-bubbled-blood of a distant star:
it's snake-meat stew... some god's
retrospective exhibit... nothing for sale.

Half-doubt and doubling: the notion
you will see your lost brother,
or the son lost in childhood...
it persists to jangle sleep.

Midnight: chrysanthemum
dance tea.  Your dream-weeping
paints every skyline hopeless
with grey chapel-glass clouds.

Presentation / Preservation

Presentation / Preservation

Air stagnation advisory... shrub desert sunset:
the Wolfhound has been looking
over my shoulder at Dust Bowl
photographs... black-'n-whites
we might render in burnt-color...
slow-to-dry oil paint on canvas.

The local radio station is in a shabby
house at the freeway side of town.
We drive past it once a month.
We speak of becoming radio DJ's,
spinners of old time Waylon-trashed music.

We speak of the country looking Martian,
red dust over death-green sagebrush.
We speak of how many God Particles
can dance on the head of a flea,
about ancient going-empty aquifers.

Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland, in Collective Memory

Child-cry of swine on Market Day,
all-night Guinness-full revelers...
a lumpy bed-'n-breakfast bed for you.

When the fever rises up your spine,
you return to a room on a three-pubs street,
glad-thank Mrs. Breen (perhaps her name).

Everything is changed now, she says,
proprietress, smiling bearer of aspirin
and tea, collector of American stamps.

It's the middle of touristy June.
Be clever, Yank, and sweat it out.
She heavens you with five blankets,

(A crayon sketch by Red Shuttleworth)

Arranmore Island, County Donegal, Ireland, in Collective Memory

April sideways rain on Leabgarrow strand.
You read Peadar O'Donnell on a bunk
by a salt-streak window, The Gates Flew Open.

The Youth Hostel is middle-of-the-week
empty... you are king of solitude, days away
from love... Flemish backpack girl in corduroy.

This was decades ago, before any Arranmore pub
grew (broken beer bottle to the neck) murderous.
Daylight at 3 a.m., she fries eggs and  pork sausage.

A kiss from the Flemish girl each time a donkey
brays its grief, Ochone, ochone, at least I'm not
a pint of an inbred mutt, deaf in all four ears.
